Rioja might be the most familiar red wine region in Spain. Quality ranges as wide and flat as the region itself, leaving the drinker to rely on producer integrity for a good wine. Lan Crianza 2010 is an excellent value and a great weeknight sipper. Crianza is a legal term within Spain's appellation laws that dictates a wine of this level spend a minimum of two years aging before release, at least one of which must be in oak. This is a classic Crianza made from 100% tempranillo grapes - the region's native red wine grape - with cherry fruit and spicy oak flavors, bright acidity and easy tannins. It's versatile and drinks better than it costs. Win, win.
