Biohof H&M Hofer Zweigelt 2011
Wine: H&M Hofer
Not too long ago, I wrote about another Zweigelt [TSVYE-gelt] the Berger, which I love for its soft tannins and food friendly qualities. This one has the same soft tannins and medium acidity one expects from the Zweigelt grape, but, this guy has a funkier, earthy quality the mellow Berger does not. I love earthy and funky.
The Hofer is imported by Skurnik Wines in New York and is one of their many quality Austrian producers. The Hofer family has been making wine from their estate grown grapes since the early 1980's (though the vineyards date back before that) in the Weinviertel region, just north of Vienna. In 2001 the family vineyards were certified organic and they've been adhering to strict organic practices since.
Typical of Austrian liter bottles of table wine, the Hofer comes in a bottle cap closure and is well priced at around $15.
H&M Hofer Zweigelt 2011
A little earthy and funky, really soft tannins, good acidity, ripe cherry fruit, more white pepper than black pepper, velvety, really, really love it.
As nights begin to cool and outside eating is at its most pleasant of the year, light reds like Beaujolais and Zweigelt are great choices. I'd love to sip this tonight with a grilled steak and vegetables, on a deck over looking the river. Anyone want to cook for me?
